The Writing Mistakes in Almost Every First Paper

Writing a good research paper is less about practice and more about knowing the rules of academic writing. The acceptance or rejection of even ground-breaking research heavily depends on the quality of the paper. Avoiding a few mistakes can drastically improve the engagement and readability of the paper, increasing the chance for publication and citation.

While first-time authors are more prone to minor or crucial mistakes, experienced researchers are not entirely exempt from them. It can be quite intimidating to rush to the finish line regardless of experience level. After weeks or months of research, the writing part can seem long and tedious. Authors tend to complete the manuscript in a cursory manner, often leaving a trail of petty mistakes.

1. Mechanics: sentence-level noise that makes reviewers distrust the rest

Similarly, excessive use of passive voice can make writing hard to read, defeating the purpose of the paper. Although some sections, such as methodology, will benefit from passive voice and past tense, it is important to be mindful about clarity.

"Data was collected, and then analysis was performed, results being obtained subsequently" can become "We collected the data, then analyzed it."

In an attempt to satisfy the recommended word count, authors tend to repeat ideas and arguments in different sections of the paper. It portrays a lack of originality in the author's perspective and proper research. It is important to maintain a balance between highlighting key points and describing established concepts.

Academics can use synonyms or rephrase text to present an idea without appearing repetitive. Restate it with new information each time: the abstract says what improved, the conclusion says why it matters going forward.

These simple yet critical mistakes can be avoided with careful checks before submission. Proofreading is just as important as the research and the writing.

2. Structure: right content, wrong address

Providing an engaging and comprehensive overview in the introduction sets the tone of the paper and hooks the audience. The introduction should highlight the research topic, provide a preview of the approach, and give a brief explanation for the reason behind the selection. For example: "This paper examines X, using Y, because prior methods failed to account for Z."

Rather than overwhelming readers with monotonous blocks of text, authors can enhance clarity by presenting data through structured lists and visual diagrams. However, the literature review or related work section should tell a story instead of just listing facts.

A structured flow of writing makes it easy for readers to understand the key information. It is hard to engage with an article if the context is unclear. Authors often make the mistake of adding details in the wrong section: background information in the methodology instead of the introduction, explaining results in the results section when that belongs in the discussion, presenting a new concept late in the article, and adding so much detail that figuring out the important points feels like finding a needle in a haystack.

A conclusion makes the manuscript come together, ending on a powerful note. A lot of authors don't realize that skipping it can leave a dull impression on the readers. So it is important to refer back to the main hypothesis, present a connection with the results, and explain what impact it can have in the real world.

3. Framing and motivation: the "why should anyone care"

It cannot be overstated that the article needs to capture the reader's interest. One way to do it is to tell a story, frame the script around the problem it solved, and shed light on the benefits of the research. It is helpful if the context is easy to follow and the motive behind an experiment is evident. This builds tension and excitement, prompting the reader to learn more about the process.

Changing "This study investigates overfitting in small-data regimes" to "Models trained on small datasets often fail silently in the real world, long after they've passed every benchmark; this study looks at why overfitting slips past standard validation in the first place" gives the reader a reason to keep reading.

The story needs to paint a picture in the reader's mind to grasp the purpose of the study. If it fails to address the problem it overcame, the article appears vague and aimless. Simply stating "the problem is significant" without a concrete example is not enough. The article should mention a specific number, case, or consequence to prove the significance. Only stating what is already known in the field won't make readers curious to know more. The goal is to maintain an academic tone while keeping them emotionally involved.

Being specific about the approach or methods used gives the audience an idea of the effects of the study in the field. It is important to clarify the purpose of the mechanism to explain its industrial applications. At the same time, authors should avoid overclaiming in the abstract and later failing to justify the claim in the results. If the abstract claims "our method is more efficient," then the results section must define that efficiency to dodge the overclaiming trap.

4. Evidence and integrity: claims that don't earn their keep

The paper's credibility depends largely on the citations and statistical findings. Authors need to provide evidence to support their claims. Although authors often skip citations for information they consider general knowledge, including appropriate references remains vital for supporting the work. Writing "it is well known that X causes Y" without a citation gets flagged by the reviewer, because well known to the author isn't always well known to the field.

Integrity also gets questioned if the findings are not properly explained. Writers tend to leave out statistical information in an attempt to hide non-significant results. This is dangerous, as reviewers can easily spot the ambiguity. The findings need to be transparent so that readers can easily understand what the result of the study is.

It should clearly state why different experiments were run and how the results differ from or relate to the hypothesis. Reporting "results improved" without the p-value or effect size withholds the one number a reviewer needs to trust it.

While explaining the reasons for the chosen topic or methodologies, justifying the results, and presenting other research for comparison, another pitfall to avoid is plagiarism. It is a serious offence to skip proper citations when including text or ideas from previously published work.

Paraphrasing a paragraph from another paper closely enough that the sentence structure matches, just with synonyms swapped in, is still a citation problem even without a copy-pasted quote. Before submitting the manuscript, authors should check carefully to avoid such mistakes.

5. Compliance and context: playing by the field's actual rules

Ignoring recommended guidelines is another common mistake in the work of early-career authors. Most of the time it is due to misinterpreting the rules. Although it can be unintentional, it may leave the impression of a lack of effort or an inability to follow instructions. It is often the fastest way to get a rejection.

Most universities and international journals set strict rules covering structure, format, and word count. Authors need to be cautious about following these while writing. Making notes after carefully reading the guidelines, and staying mindful of them, is an easy way to avoid this mistake.

It is also important to avoid writing in complicated language. It makes the paper hard to understand and suggests the author lacks understanding of the topic. It can be tricky to maintain a balance between what is appropriate for academic writing and what reads as slang. The goal is to keep the writing engaging and clear.

Writing "the aforementioned phenomenon exhibits a deleterious correlation" instead of "this negatively affects X" makes a desk editor wonder if the author fully understands their own result.

Why it matters

Research papers are a way of sharing knowledge with peers. The goal is to explain the methodologies and experiments well enough for another researcher to understand and replicate the results. A research paper also gives insight to any reader seeking knowledge in a particular field or topic. Following these few rules can drastically improve a paper's quality, increasing its chance of being published and cited while making knowledge accessible to any curious individual.
